Coddling Today's Youth

They say you never really know a man until you've walked a mile in his shoes.  With all the politically correct terminology we're supposed to use these days, it's hard to know what will be offensive to another person.  So many times we hear of certain trigger words that we shouldn't use because they can offend someone else.  While some of these claims seem ridiculous to me, I must remember that I never know what someone else may be going through.  Until you or someone you love has suffered from anxiety, depression, or some form of abuse, you never know what it is like to live with these terrible scenarios.  It all boils down to respect for me.  It doesn't cost anything to be a decent and kind human being.  Even if you think that it is silly not to use certain words, just remember that you never truly know what someone else is going through and if it means changing your terminology a little bit to help someone else feel more comfortable, then what's the harm in that for you?  I'm not saying we should never speak our minds because without communication we would never get anywhere productive.  It's just that some youth today deal with real issues that cause them severe anxiety and depression and we as a society must be a little more sensitive.  I do however feel that it is important to teach kids strategies to deal with these triggers when they arrive because they will.  The world is not always kind and everyone doesn't always get a trophy.  There will be heart ache and disappointment in life and it is important to know how to handle certain situations when they arise.  I'm not saying we should all be full of rainbows and butterflies, but maybe it's time we as a society take a minute to consider what it is like to walk in someone else's shoes and just be kind.
