Analyzing Trifles
I recently read Trifles, by Susan Glaspell as part of my English class. As I was reading this short story/play, I began to see how the author was speaking out against the male perception of what a female's role is in society. As I grew up in the 70's, I still remember people older than I am talking about what a woman should be doing. As I got older and then married, I realized that my wife was a vital part in decision making as well as one of the bread winners in my house. Think of all the women that did not get the chance to explore their talents and realize their dreams by going along with the stereotypes of the times. In the story, a county attorney and a sheriff were completely blinded because the evidence of the motive for murder was in the house and they never found it because as they asked the women questions, they immediately dismissed their responses because of their viewpoints of a woman's role in society. I believe that all women should have the same rights, pay scale, and promotions as men do. It's in part due to people like Glaspell who spoke out against equality that help pave the way for women to start speaking out and speaking up. My question to you today is how do you feel about women in society? Do you think times have changed or do we still have a ways to go?
